I agree Dave about music that is not necessarily spiritual still having the ability to heal you. I remember when I was homeless I heard ATCQ "Stressed Out" and when Faith began to sing "Come on baby we gon' make it", I just lost it and started sobbing. But it was just what I needed to hear to keep going and keep pushing.

The initial topic was expressed in a way I hadn't heard before, but it's so accurate! Music fans always manage to find each other. It also confirms after taking my first Smooth Jazz Cruise in '05, a lot of the same guests return year, after year, after year regardless of the lineup because it's an experience like no other... live music ongoing from the morning till the wee hours of the night! Yes it's overpriced, but worth it to me!

So SMC, what would you do if you had a "Bleek Gilliam" moment as in Mo' Better Blues?
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?

@Brick I understand. You should see the looks I get from jazz heads. Instead of teaching me, some will turn their nose up. My background is classical. If I explain it to you, you would have an ahah moment. I saw Wooten back in the day at his house playing. IDK what the hell he was doing. A friend of mine explained it and then I understood because of what I learned in my piano studies. Now most fans don't know how to play an instrument but they know how an artist play. All this is to say some fans want to know more. Sorta dissect the artist & his instrument as if you were opening a machine. Some just want to press play and watch it go. There is just so many levels of a fan.

That's how I kinda understand why people would make that comment bout Wooten. @Soul music yeah you have to work on your craft.

Wow, Dave, how did I miss this thread!?!?!? I didn't read all the responses, but I have to totally agree with S_M_C and Jaefox1. I think I would wither and die without music. It's definitely a PASSION and a NEED!

I've actually thought about that before. I would probably wind up with messed up teeth and shut down like he did. This is real for me dude. When I was an over-the-road truck driver and I couldn't play because I had no time AT ALL and was still getting calls that I had to turn down because I was hundreds of miles away with no idea when I was coming home, I was done for man. That was part of the reason I let it go. I just pray that I never get hurt to that point.

its easier to be a music fan (and less painful) when youre not caught up in the music business. i need to start scheduling time to just listen and enjoy music. i miss that part.

Why do some fans stereotype musicians? You know the ones I'm talking about. They think that after performing on stage that you're ready to party afterwards? Sex, drugs, and Rock N' Roll. It's such a cliche.

I was just reading an article on Smokey Robinson who has a new cd out. He said after the show when people come backstage for the meet & greet, people ask him where the party is. He tells them the party was up there on the stage. Sometimes, I read some of the comments and I don't know why I bother. There a few that believe that because you're not doing a nine to five, that because it's something you love, there's no real work involved. I don't think they understand that's energy given on the stage which is why they expect you to hang afterwards. They don't get it.
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?

@Jeff I was guilty of stereotyping. I think when I was young I saw too many music movies where the musicians drank and did drugs. I guess its all those Rockqmentaries. lol but that lasted until I got to high school. By then I met a ton of 70s-80s bands. I remember in college I met Big Daddy Kane and a couple of Rap artist on the bills. There was no parties going on. Its really the person, and not the art. If you party, you party.

I was thinking the other day about all the kids I meet. I see about 10% going off and finding their own music. Most them have families that is open minded esp. to other music. Other 80% is stuck on radio, you can't even pry them away from the same bs. But like this thread says...I think we are wired differently.

Some of us are seekers.. some of us just accept the norm, whatever is deemed popular..

Well said H_H but its up to us to facilitate that desire to hear learn and seek all things that can stimulate them and Open our minds and eyes as well. we can always learn something new. I had my 15 YO nephew with me yesterday and came to my crib and looked at my record collection and was like "Wow you have a record player" he wants to be a rapper and I explained to him about how history of music is the greatest tool for understanding what it is you are doing, He was looking at my home studio like OK can I come through and lay something down before I go back to school? I gave him a buch of "Beat" CD's to take and write something to" Hopefully he will be motivated enough to want to come back and ask more questions
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?

Oh so true. You have to have that desire, and too the opportunity has to be there. But it's just crazy how these music paths/searches go. People that are on your path are there for a reason. I can relate to your nephew.

Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?

I think music fans are wired differently- that is those who are fans of music, and not fans of artists. In my opinion, someone who is a fan of an artist may be so for any number of reasons that may not even pertain to their music though the music may be the introduction or link to their interest. But those who are fans of music have an interest in the music that transcends the artist. Sometimes its deep and sometimes its not. Sometimes its who said and not what they said, and other times its the opposite.
They realize the bigger picture and don't subscribe to the obvious, but are more connected to the music as their primary interest. They understand musicianship, creativity and connection that music has created.

As with all stereotypes, we should do our job to bring them to an end, But I think artists perpetuate these by partnering inappropriately. How you gonna be on a tour sponsored by Henessey and Absolut and think people ain't gonna wonder where the party is? (LOL)

i love music and sounds
but the thing is that i forget names i dont care about names by the names i just care about what my ears hear
if its hardrock and my ears like it i am okay with that

i have been to punkrock concert or concert of EINSTURZENDE NEUBATEN or classic stuff
if i am in the mood and my ears can handle it i am okay with that
and you really have to be open minded to listen to SOUNDS

and yes i was also a drummer in a country band lol (long story)

i am not a person who know the names of artist or even the name of songs or albums... i know its maybe stupid

i know maybe its wrong

so sorry if i offend people with this

the same thing it is with art i love art but i also love what my eyes love to see if a child draw a thing i love it as the same as a PICASSO or REMBRAND

you have to be open minded

thats all i have to say

@ EJAM... How do you know/remember Rembrandt and Picasso? or Lalah? Were you taught these or did their work move you to remember?

I am asking because I am interested, and to inform my opinion
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?

@thomas

their work moves me without knowing who they are i saw their paintings wenn i was a child

and music is the same thing..
i think i have told yall this before the first time i hear lalah was wenn i was in a bar and it was the song SMILE and the intro of the drums i was like woow and then the voice i had to stop drinkin and went ask the bartender who the singer was and what the album title was
yep it was lalah ( haha and the drum intro was william kennedy wich i should know because of the sound of his snare and his early works with ANDY NARRELL and THE YELLOWJACKETS)

but hey i am just a someone who loves sounds

as a music fan, lots of memories are related to music
i'll hear s song and that'll take me back to high school etc

certain songs will put me in different moods
its not only the words of the song, but the chorus or melody will speak out to me
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?
July 27, 2010 01:17PM
Wow I hear you Ejam, I'm kinda with the sounds as well, I recall me literally leaving my place immediately after hearing The Brand New Heavies right to my local store and asking for the single and they only had the album which I bought and was not disappointed. The same with Erykah Badu when I saw her perform other side of the game(but I had to wait and did went to the store first day of release)I was actually working at SONY when Jill Scott first dropped ( had over 10 free copies threw barter trade amd promises that I reserve not to disclose smoking smiley ) I alos understand Jay when he speaks of a certain time frfame, but I'm kinda of more of the general feel then the time because alot of the 80's music that many like does not do it for me.sonically.and if it does it is the sound that does it for me (Like Loose ends for some reason)
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?
July 27, 2010 07:22PM
For me, it's the sounds but it's also the chord changes to me that may influence or not influence the sound. They do something when played a certain way or a certain voicing that someone decides to play against a melody. I love a lot of Incognito's stuff for that very same reason as well as lounge and some electronica which also has some great stuff on a sonic level.
Re: Music fans: Are we wired different?
July 28, 2010 01:12PM
I like the sound of an artist but not just from the artist...but from the whole presentation. There are some artists who could never sing an acapella song for me... but who with accompaniment will give me just what I need (Sade, Chrisette).

Over the years, I've become more and more attracted to sounds that are flawed... not perfect but natural. Flaws within the context of a well delivered presentation make a sound/song feel real and not contrived... the classics from the 60s and 70s are good examples of what I mean.

@Ejam I feel ya on the name thing. When I was in college I had a hard time remember which composer wrote what? Beethoven,Vivaldi, Bach, etc. ugh Then on top of that my teacher would play their music LOUD.
